Information Overloaded

At the end of this podcast, I came to realize that it did not change my mind about Mr. Carr's thoughts from his article at all. I reflected back on what my opinion was, which was that I strongly agreed with Mr. Carr and several points that he made. Listening to this podcast did not sway me in any way to change my stance on what I believe about the Internet.

This podcast did point out some very interesting things, though. In Carr's article, he conveyed the overload of information as something that made us lazy, and lessened our intelligence. But he also portrayed the overload of technology as very quick and fast-paced. This article presented the idea of the overload of information in a different way; which was the feeling of being overwhelmed.
Ms. Jardine expressed how people tend to feel overwhelmed with the vast amount on information we have available to us, while Carr presented our availability of information with the feeling of quickness and speed. This definitely caused me to look at it from a different aspect. I think that the overload of information can cause us to feel overwhelmed, and as Ms. Jardine pointed out, with the need to remember and store all of this information so that it will not be lost. I feel that Google is obviously a great tool that allows us to store our information and to remember it so that we do not lose or forget something that could benefit us. The way we go about finding that information and learning that information instead of just skimming it is what I believe really matters.
"One way to put it all into perspective is to hypothetically plug all that data into physical objects we all recognize. That 1.8 zettabytes of data, for example, would require 57.5 billion 32 GB iPads to store. How much is that? About $34.4 trillion worth. That’s equivalent to the GDP of the United States, Japan, China, Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Italy combined. And that’s how much data we’ll create and store just this year." (mashable.com) This quote really gives the idea of really just how much information is actually stored on the computer.
Obviously, there is a great amount of information available for us to explore. We should take advantage of the "overload" of information we have, because we are lucky enough that we have it right at our finger tips.

  1. Your fact about how much data we will create and store this year is amazing. That is crazy to think about. And going along with your blog I think it is important that we take advantage of the all the information we have. We have access to so many things, and who knows what we will have access to in the future, and what our world might look like. I think that we all know that we have a lot of information on the internet, but it is hard to wrap around our heads actually how much we do have, and your fact really puts that into perspective. It will be really interesting to see how the amount of access we have now might change.
