“Technocomedy: When Technology Makes Us Laugh”

                Technocomedy, yes I made that word up. But only because I believe there should be a word to describe the relationship between technology and comedy.

                Everyday, we are drawn to technology in so many ways. It’s actually been proven that when checking email or Facebook, the brain releases dopamine, the chemical related to pleasure. This brings us to our next point…after the fact of getting to said social media site, why do we stay there for hours? (Ryan).

                What creates that comedy in our technology? In the recently viral “Pittsburgh Dad” series shared on YouTube, we can see what is supposed to be the common average Pittsburgh dad. And, as a Pittsburgher myself, I can say this is pretty darn accurate. These videos are hilarious because they show our daily lives in what should be a normal way for us, BUT because we’re accustomed to being around them every day, they often lose their luster until pointed out by someone else.

                Another key example is the sheer means of obtaining comical information via technology these days. Picture this…. suddenly, a flash mob appears on the campus quad. Within seconds, passersby pull out their cell phones and start recording! Not only are the people present for the live show able to appreciate the scene, but so are millions of YouTube or Facebook viewers later that evening and for the rest of eternity in all parts of the world!

                The increase in physical objects of technology—as well as the capabilities they bestow—are the reasons for the vast quantity and quality of viewing/listening pleasure obtained by people of all ages, all over the world.
