How Are Generations Reacting?

We all know that there are differences between generations, but how much of a gap do we actually have? Looking over the responses I collected, it is crazy how different my life was growing up, compared to my parents and friends. When I think about my childhood compared to my brother, who is three years younger than I, I think about the technology he had that was just coming out when I was his age. I thought that this was a big difference, but this wasn't as big of a difference in comparison to my parents. When you drive around, do you usually see children outside playing in the yard, or whole families outside hanging out? I feel like these are starting to become rare sights to see these days.

One of the things I noticed in the interviews I took was that children don't play outside as much. And we have discussed this in class, the technology that we have now, makes children more apt to stay in, and watch movies, or play video games, or go on the computer than going outside and enjoying the outdoors. I am not saying that nobody goes out anymore, but it seems that people don't go outside for 'fun' anymore, or at least for a long period of time. It has been a while since I took a walk, just for the sake of taking a walk. Everyday now, I seem to be rushing to a class, or walking to a meeting. When the weather gets nice here at Juniata, more students do go outside, but usually they bring their laptops to work on homework. Only towards the end of the semester do students seem more likely to enjoy the outdoors. I feel like more so now, we are very involved with other people's lives, and wrapped up in our own that we forget to see the little things in life.
I don't know if any of you had typewriters at home, but I remember growing up, we had a type writer, from my parents. There wasn't a delete button you could press if you typed something wrong on the type writer. When I was younger, I remember thinking that type writer was so cool, even when we had a computer in our house. I used to ask my mother to use it, to type letters. And now we have computers, which my parents both know how to use, and both agree that having a computer has been pretty beneficial in their lives. I just wonder if soon iPads will become the computer, and computers will too be out of style. It's crazy to look into the future and see how far ahead we could go. Is it moving too fast? I know in class we have talked about this too, but remember when we learned how to write? Now this question might sound silly, but most of the people I know prefer to type rather than write, myself included, because it is faster. So what happens if children stop learning to write? I know many children don't know how to write cursive, which means, do they not know how to sign their name? Our lives are changing in front of our eyes, and I feel like for my generation it is harder to notice this because we grew up in it. I can't imagine how different the world must look to my parents, their friends, and my grandparents. I know my grandma doesn't want to learn how to use a computer. So it is interesting to see how the each generation acts towards the new technology.
Here is an interesting article I found, I haven't gotten a chance to watch all the videos attached, but the pictures along with it are pretty funny. I especially like the one about 5 stages of No Internet Access, because it is so true. Friends of mine don't know what to do without internet, because we rely so much on it. <http://blog.koldcast.tv/2011/koldcast-news/5-signs-technology-is-moving-too-fast/>

  1. I like your post alot you have some great ideas about how technology has changed since your childhood compared to your borthers three years later. Do you feel that the change from your parents childhood to yours and that of your brother are a good thing or a bad thing? And if you chould choose to grow up without technology like older generations would you? I think this post is great

  2. I thought you have some great points in your post. First, it is very rare to see families outside just hanging out. I know when my family gets together we try to spend as much time together as possible because we all either live or go to school in different states. So it isn't that often that all of us see one another.
I never thought about children no longer being taught how to write. That would mean every child would need a computer in class and pen and paper would no longer be needed. How weird would that be?

  3. I totally agree. It really is crazy to think how much things have change in our lifetime alone. Hearing stories from my parents and grandparents always leaves me hanging because I just can't believe how much different things are in today's world. Also, there is no doubt in my mind that one day I will baffle my children by telling them stories of how I once did things.
